Experiment report on metallographic preparation of tin and its alloys

A non-ferrous alloy composed of tin-based and other alloying elements. The main alloying elements are lead, antimony, copper and so on. Tin alloy has low melting point, low strength and hardness, high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion coefficient, atmospheric corrosion resistance, excellent friction reduction performance, easy to weld with steel, copper, aluminum, their alloys and other materials combine. It is a good solder and also a good bearing material.


01 Grinding


Grind the specimen with Alpha -600 automatic grinder&polisher,abrasive paper P800→P2500;

02 Plane grinding

Tin and its alloys are relatively soft and can be easily scratched on the surface.

General mechanical polishing is difficult to remove tiny scratches on the surface of the sample, so it is better to perform vibration polishing on it. This would give us a surface without scratches and stress layers that allows not only optical metallographic analysis but also EBSD analysis.

It can be seen from the above pictures that there are no scratches on the surface of the sample after vibration polishing, and the outlines of each phase are clear and distinct.
